The Creation of an Oil Portrait
I prefer to meet with the client and sitters in order to become acquainted with their personality and style preferences. During this meeting, we will discuss the portrait composition, pose, clothing, and background. I will also take reference photographs to be used during the painting process. In cases where the sitter is not available, or if the client has photographs suitable for reference, I will use the photographs supplied by the client.
After analyzing the photographs, I will compose a charcoal sketch which will give the client a good idea of the final portrait’s appearance. With agreement from the client, I will proceed with the creation of the oil portrait.
Portraits are painted in oil on canvas or linen. The size of the portrait can be decided by the client; the typical size is 22”x24”.
